Historically, Douglas-fir was the tree that initiated the development of the city of North Vancouver; the looming old-growth trees became the backbone of the local economy as merchant ships arrived to be loaded up with lumber. It was also the original ship-building material, especially suited for maritime use and available in abundance. With these large-scale stacked posts, a reintroduction of the material back into the surroundings in a modern context is initiated. The use of Douglas-fir in these contrasting settings reinforces the cyclical nature of wood, and life, and also helps us to connect to the past through memory.
