Siigaay means ‘ocean’ in Haida. The Siigaay piece was inspired by the ocean that traditionally protected and preserved the unique cultural history of Haida Gwaii from Western influence.

Japan, also an archipelago, shares the same ocean that has also protected Japan from cultural interference from the rest of Asia for many centuries. Being culturally unique is not enough, however, the people must have the will and courage to promote their unique identity and to show pride in their cultural heritage through art and design.

I admire this quality and determination within both cultures that span the Pacific Ocean. The wood used within the heart of the Siigaay sculpture is ancient western red cedar, sourced from Haida Gwaii and believed to be 800-1000 years old.
